The Bird by Aleesha Magpayo

“A poem dedicated to Dalila Magpayo, the greatest woman I know.”

The Bird

A pestilence of grief curses the grounds of a home that once was occupied by the bird,

Spreading to all that was left behind when she spread her wings and flew away.

Now there is no chirping in the dawn of the freshly rising sun,

But a stale desolation generated by the silence.

Unbeknownst to why

She had to

leave.

The

bird caught

in the transcendental voyage,

Because of the weakening cage that could no longer make her stay.

So now the bird inhabits the land of promise, without her kin that yearns for her dearly

So the kin awaits their deserving reunion but alas in a life of another, where time is only a theory.

Where the tears will not fall like rain but in an oasis where the fish can swim

Where it does not make sense to succumb to the melancholy

Dues of this world that failed the bird

And her family.

So rest.

So

dear bird,

Watch from birds-eye-view,

While the earth continues to spin with this odd twist,

And despite the deadline of the cage, the symbol of your wings strike an eternity
